The Modules
Module 1: Introduction to mindfulness and journaling
Module one sets the foundation by introducing concepts around mindfulness and journaling, setting personal intentions, and reflecting on what you hope to get out of this week. Mindfulness is about being fully present and aware of our thoughts, feelings, and surroundings without judgment. It is the practice of being here, being in the now. If you’ve been feeling disconnected or distracted from the present moments of your life, this week will help you set some goals for directing your journaling practice to where you need it most. We’ll hopefully dispel some myths about mindfulness and meditation along the way (no, you are not expected to ‘empty’ your mind and you don’t have to sit still in absolute silence).
Module 2: Cultivating gratitude
Module two focuses on cultivating gratitude as a means to enhance mindfulness. This lesson emphasizes how gratitude can help us appreciate the present moment and shift our perspective from one of scarcity to one of abundance. The gratitude we will focus on will centre around genuine acknowledgement and appreciation of what one has and experiences; and not on superficial posivity or ignoring life’s challenges. Cultivating gratitude can significantly benefit our overall wellbeing by promoting positive emotions, reducing stress, and increasing resilience.
Module 3: Cultivating self-compassion
Module three will focus on cultivating self-compassion as a vital aspect of mindfulness and overall wellbeing. The lesson highlights the importance of treating oneself with kindness and understanding, especially during difficult times. This week we’ll acknowledge our struggles with empathy, practice releasing self-critical thoughts, and cultivate a practice of warmth and kindness towards ourselves.
Module 4: Exploring emotions
Module four of the writing course will focus on understanding and engaging with our emotions through mindfulness. This module emphasizes that emotions are a natural part of the human experience and that mindfulness allows us to observe them without becoming overwhelmed. You’ll learn to tap into your emotions as a useful source of information, assisting with self-regulation, and guiding you toward an altered more peaceful relationship with your emotions.
Module 5: Connecting with the senses
Module five brings our focus to connecting with our senses to enhance mindfulness and encourage groundedness. This module highlights how our senses can anchor us to the present moment, enabling fuller engagement with our surroundings. This is the lesson for those of us who sometimes feel disconnected or distracted from the present. We will practice observing sensations without attachment or judgment, fully experiencing the present moment, and harness the ability to bring this practice into moments when we feel we need it the most.
Module 6: Cultivating mindful habits
Module six takes a look at our everyday habits and how we can learn to cultivate mindfulness habits into our daily life. This module emphasizes how simple, mindful practices can help us stay present and grounded amidst life’s busyness. We’ll explore how to bring awareness, presence, and intentionality to our habits or daily routines.
Module 7: reflection and integration
Module seven will focus on integrating the past week’s practices, helping you reflect on what you’ve found most helpful, and identifying practices you may wish to carry forward. This module is about recognizing that there are no two people alike, and therefore, no one size fits all mindfulness or journaling practice. We’ll explore what worked best for you and consider what take-aways can help you integrate mindfulness and journaling into your ongoing self-care and personal growth routines.
